Rob Colborne (38yrs)

Head Professional/Golf Manager

The Professional team are headed up by Rob Colborne who has twenty years of experience as a Golf Professional and has developed a solid reputation as a coach.

Pro ShopRob played as a junior golfer at Southwood and Hindhead Golf Clubs winning Club Championships and posting a longstanding course record in the process. He eventually found his passion for golf outweighed his other sporting aspirations and his promise as a footballer and cricketer took a back seat.

At the age of eighteen he began as a Junior Assistant at his home club under the expert tutelage of Bob Hammond. It was here at Southwood that he found his knack for coaching and honed his skills with the countless beginners that arrived at the very popular municipal course. Despite some early playing success on the regional Pro-Am circuit, Rob began to focus more and more on his coaching, combining it with management skills as he became increasingly involved in the day to day running of the busy course.

In 2001 Bob Hammond retired at Southwood and Rob decided it was the right time to develop his career at a new club and gained appointment at Farnham Golf Club that spring time. Rob was employed by Grahame Cowlishaw who himself was a former assistant to Bob Hammond. This created wonderful continuity and the change to a private members club was also an important experience for the young pro. At Farnham Golf Club Rob continued to develop his coaching and build a comprehensive portfolio of players from high handicappers to touring professionals who came to him to sharpen their games.

The next big move came in 2007 when Rob was asked to succeed Grahame Cowlishaw as Club Pro when Grahame was offered the role of Secretary/Manager. This was the natural move for all involved and while Grahame continued to manage the club from the office, Rob took over the shop and assumed the title of Head Professional. Since that time Rob has endeavoured to continue to move with the times and create a modern club environment within his retail and coaching roles. This has seen a shop re-vamp, a step into online sales, a new ecommerce newsletter and a dedicated approach to custom fitting and personalised sales.

Early in 2014, Rob’s role evolved further when he was drafted into a new position during the clubs re-structuring of the management team. He became Golf Manager and was also included in a marketing committee set up to keep up with the rapidly changing golfing business. He now continues to run his retail outlet, coaches all levels of golfer, develops his own game and helps to run all the golfing activities at the club.

Luke Bone (27yrs)

Head PGA Assistant Professional and Junior Academy Head Coach

Pro ShopAfter trying his hand at almost every other sport, Luke took to golf at the relatively late age of 15. By the time he turned 16 he had joined as a junior member at Farnham Golf Club and received his first handicap of 28. To say he got “the bug” would be an understatement, everyday Luke would jump on his 50cc moped, head down to the club with his clubs on his back and practice until it got dark…. All the practice paid off and he managed the remarkable achievement of getting down to a handicap of 3 within a year of joining the club. He also managed to force his way into the Surrey boys’ squad after they noticed his rapid improvement. Before moving into the adult ranks of the club Luke managed to win a host of major competitions at Farnham Golf Club, including winning the Silver Frigate (men’s open) and the Victory Cup (match play knockout) in the same year. (2005)

Luke then played a lot more sporadically over the next couple of years and had a variety of different jobs away from Golf, including an interesting summer as an ice cream man. It was at some point in early 2007 when he decided that he should get back into his golf and he never looked back. On one of his first days back at the club Luke met his old coach and soon to be head Professional, Rob Colborne on the range where Rob mentioned his own imminent promotion. By the end of the conversation, Luke had a new career path and Rob had a new assistant.

Since taking the Job of assistant and beginning his PGA training, Luke has become a fully qualified PGA Professional, played in a number of Professional events in the region including a 1st place at The RAC Pro Am in 2011, become an enthusiastic coach with an ever increasing client base from both Farnham members and visitors, helped coach a number of academy members through to full membership and helped set up and run the Farnham Golf Club Junior Academy which is currently thriving and going from strength to strength.

Ollie Lewis (24yrs)

Assistant PGA Professional

Pro Shop Ollie turned professional in 2009, when he started his PGA training and completed his degree course in August 2013. He is now a fully qualified PGA professional a forging a strong reputation as a player and a coach.

During his training period, Ollie has worked particularly hard on his game and has been inspired to play in many local and national Professional events. In his first four years on the Pro-Am circuit and in regional events he has had some excellent results and it has been a solid start to his professional career. In all four years Ollie has finished in the top 10 OOM South Region Winter Series and 2013 was his best year to date. He finished in the top 20 of the South Region Q School, which set him up for 8 top ten finished, including runner up spots at Hankley Common and London Scottish golf clubs.

This year Ollie has been devoting more time to coaching and has been taking junior Clinic’s as well as individual lessons for pupils at all standards. Ollie’s sharp short game is a strong part of his game and feel’s this is the strongest part of his coaching with many great drills and techniques to work on.

The future looks bright for this dynamic young professional.
